Protecting The Family's Finances
It is especially important for young families (but also for most other people) to ensure that their standard of living is protected in the event of an accident, illness or the death of a key earner. I believe that it is not enough just to cover the mortgage if someone dies. We are all far more likely to have a major illness than we are to die young, and losing an income can have a devastating effect on the family’s financial security at a very stressful time.
The cost of protecting your financial situation is often very reasonable, but sadly, some people see it as a waste of money. Those who claim on their insurances, and receive either lump sums or regular income, are very glad they did put it in place. If any of my clients has to make a claim, I can help them through the process.
Don’t forget that you may also need to protect your business, so that it can continue in the event of a key worker being ill or dying prematurely. Health protection and life assurance can be set up to minimise tax and ensure that money is in the right hands when it is needed.
It is very important to consider whether life assurances should be in trust, so that the money can be paid out quickly and without Inheritance Tax implications. Buying directly from supermarkets or online companies can lead to this being neglected.
The financial protection products that may be appropriate for you include:
- term assurance
- family income benefit
- whole of life assurance
- critical illness cover
- income protection
- contribution protection (or 'waiver of premium benefit')
- accident, sickness and unemployment cover
- terminal illness benefit.
